Relief for Afghan Families

Afghanistan is in crisis and as a result some 70,000 displaced people are fleeing to the United States for safety and refuge. theHeart is providing World Relief with financial support to help relocate 10 to 20 families in North Carolina.

By Graham Aitken, Pastor

Currently, there are 70,000 refugees from Afghanistan who are making their way to the United States to begin a new life here. These are people whose lives were in great danger and who likely would not have survived under Taliban rule.

World Relief is one of the organizations tasked by the U.S. government to oversee the resettling of Afghan refugees nationwide. Jonathan Musser at the World Relief office in High Point, North Carolina, reached out to me directly to communicate an urgent need related to the growing crisis in Afghanistan.

"Thank you for mobilizing your church to be generous in a time of such great need! We are very grateful for your partnership!"—Jonathan Musser, World Relief

Make a Difference Now

The World Relief offices in our local triad area are jumping into this effort and attempting to resettle 10-20 families. As you might imagine, there are significant costs associated with housing refugee families and providing all of the necessary services that enable them to thrive in a brand new environment.

World Relief estimates that the cost of resettling one family from Afghanistan is $10,000. As such, Jonathan is reaching out to all of their church partners and asking them to consider financially supporting this effort.

It did not take long for our leadership team at theHeart to say yes to this request and the response from our church family has been incredible. To date, we have already raised more than $6,000, and we’re still going.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you to those who have already given. And if you haven’t had the chance to yet, now is the time."—Graham Aitken

Exciting Things Ahead

We envision a future at theHeart where love in action is at the very core of our who we are as a church family.

With this in mind, we have been strengthening our existing ministry partnerships and exploring new opportunities for Christ-centered service, both locally and globally. That includes a developing relationship with World Relief, a global, Christian organization that "exists to empower the local church to serve the most vulnerable”.

The relational, sustainable, and holistic approach of World Relief mirrors the posture we want to take at theHeart as we come alongside those in need. As such, we believe a strategic partnership with this leading organization will offer significant opportunities for service.

Watch for much more information over the next few months on how we plan to further support World Relief and its important and life-changing work. Our strong belief is that God will use this relationship in significant ways as we earnestly seek to show up as the hands and feet of Christ to those in need.
